SORRY WORKS! E-TOPIC: BUT WE'RE NOT READY FOR DISCLOSURE...
We hear some of the version of the following all the time: "But, we're not ready for disclosure...."
The docs aren't ready to say sorry; they're scared.....or we don't know if the insurer(s) will be supportive.....or the defense lawyers have told us "no".....or we're not sure where the leadership is on this issue....or....or....or.
There's always an excuse...in fact, a thousand excuses, but only one reality: You need to implement disclosure. It's gotta happen. Now. Your ability to reduce liability exposure while increasing safety/quality as well as staff satisfaction and retention are counting on the successful implementation of disclosure.
But let's not be naive...we're ultimately talking about culture change. We're also talking about many different branches of the healthcare, insurance, and legal professions working together and trusting each other. Not easy stuff. So what's the first step? Answer: Get all the players together and talk about Sorry Works!
Often I get called for a Sorry Works! presentation for Grand Rounds, ethics seminar, leadership meetings, etc, and I always tell the host organization to invite everyone to the talks....the docs, the nurses, the lawyers, the insurance professionals, the c-suite crowd, risk & claims, etc, etc. Invite them all, and schedule multiple presentations (for the same price!) on the same day, because you can't get everyone in the same room at the same time. When everyone hears the same talk, the barriers start coming down...the lawyers see the docs nodding their heads....the docs see the administrators and insurance execs getting excited....the c- suite crowds watches the nurses talk....etc, etc, etc.
I always tell a host organization when I'm done two things will happen: 1) a buzz about disclosure will be generated in your organization and 2) your disclosure champions - the people you can populate a disclosure committee with - will step forward.
Disclosure can happen in your organization....you just have to take the first step. At Sorry Works!, we help hospitals, insurers, and large practices take that first step every day. To inquire about presentations and training in conjunction with our partners at Stevens & Lee, call 618-559- 8168 or e-mail doug@sorryworks.net.
To our American readers, we wish you a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend. For the rest of the world, get back to work on Monday because us Yanks are headed to the beach!
Cheers,
- Doug
