DECEMBER 15, 2006 SORRY WORKS! EXTRA - HOLY NAME HOSPITAL (TEANECK, NJ)
This past Tuesday I was in Teaneck, NJ to speak to the staff and administration of Holy Name Hospital. The talk was very well received and Sorry Works! had another successful trip into the Garden State. However, that's not the reason for this extra e-mail.
My presentation was in the building that houses the nursing school at Holy Name Hospital. I arrived a little early and the room I was to speak in was still occupied by another meeting, so I retreated to the lobby and found a comfortable chair. Looking around the lobby I saw standing in the corner an artificial tree covered with numerous scarves. Instead of presents under the tree a large box of winter coats and blankets sat next to it. I kept staring at the display because it was unique and different. Never seen a Christmas tree like it before!
A staff member from the nursing school walked by, saw me looking at the tree, and in an almost apologetic voice said the tree was a project of the Holy Name nursing students. She said the future nurses decorate the tree with scarves, and after Christmas they donate the scarves along with warm winter jackets and blackets to needy people. I told the staff member the tree was absolutely beautiful.
I am sharing this story to 1) give a tip of the hat to the great folks at Holy Name Hospital, and 2) to give you, our readers, something special to think about.
No doubt many of you will scramble around this weekend to buy last minute presents and make preparations for the upcoming holidays. As you dash around please keep the Holy Name Christmas tree in mind - it's a great example of what the season is truly all about.
There are far too many people in the United States and around the world who have nothing. The holidays literally assault them by reminding them that they don't have the means to provide gifts to their children or a nice dinner for their family.
Many of you already help needy people and charities in your communities, which is fantastic. However, as you rush to buy your last gifts this weekend, try to find one additional person or family to help with a gift or a meal. Provide some hope and inspiration to folks who really need it - that's what the season is all about!
Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday season.
Cheers,
