Sorry Works! disclosure training
The Sorry Works! Coalition is beginning to team up with the Risk Management and Patient Safety Institute (RMPSI) to offer disclosure training workshops. Geri Amori, RMPSI Director and former ASHRM president, and Doug Wojcieszak, Sorry Works! spokesperson, will be holding their first disclosure training workshop for the West Virginia Hospital Association in late August.

If you are interested in disclosure training workshops for healthcare, insurance, or legal professionals, contact doug@sorryworks.net or call 618-559-8168.

COPIC's 3Rs presentation now on Sorry Works! website
Dr. Richert Quinn, Medical Director for COPIC Insurance, was kind enough to share his Power Point presentation on the successful 3Rs program with Sorry Works. Dr. Quinn's presentation can be found on the website.

Few house cleaning items that COPIC and Sorry Works! need you, our readers, to know.

1) COPIC is not a member of The Sorry Works! Coalition, although they are supportive of much of what we do and advocate.

2) COPIC’s 3Rs program differs slightly from true Sorry Works! in that it excludes plaintiffs attorneys and it is only for cases less than $30,000 in value. Patients and families represented by counsel and/or cases greater than $30,000 in value are litigated through traditional means under the 3Rs program. Sorry Works! covers all cases, from minor incidents to wrongful deaths, and patients and families are encouraged to retain legal counsel (if they wish). We believe the inclusion of plaintiff’s counsel adds to the credibility of a disclosure program (from the patient and family perspective) and also assists with negotiations. Furthermore, we believe bigger cases (major injuries, wrongful deaths) provide the greatest opportunity for the savings (reduced litigation and associated costs) afforded by Sorry Works. However, in most instances, patients and families will only do Sorry Works! in “big” cases if they have their own counsel present.

Clinton and Obama on Disclosure
In case you missed it, Senators Clinton and Obama penned a very nice article on disclosure in the New England Journal of Medicine. The article can be found on our website by viewing the following link.

Another state goes "sorry"
Our friends in South Carolina joined the growing list of states to pass apology immunity laws. S. 1059 was recently passed by the South Carolina General Assembly and will soon be signed by the Governor. We have had two successful visits to the Palmetto State over the last year and interest in Sorry Works! seems to be high among many healthcare and insurance organizations. Hopefully this legislation will encourage them to keep working towards full disclosure. We'll keep you posted.

Hitting the Road
Sorry Works! continues to hit the road. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of the medical staff at MacNeal Hospital in Chicago, IL said the Sorry Works! presentation was effective, and several included personal comments in their surveys such as "excellent" and "great" program. Thank you to our new friends at MacNeal Hospital.

New speaking invitations for Sorry Works! continue to role in. Recent additions include the PhRMA Medical Liability Conference in Huntington Beach, CA. Sorry Works! spokesperson Doug Wojcieszak will appear on a panel discussion with Philip K. Howard of Common Good and Garrison Bliss of SIMPD. The panel will be moderated by Victor Schwartz of Shook, Hardy, Bacon, LLP and the American Tort Reform Association. Should be a good panel discussion. While in California Wojcieszak will also speak at Placentia Linda Hospital, Placentia, CA.

Other additions to the Sorry Works! speaking calendar include the New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals in October and a keynote speech at the ExecuSummit Insurance Conference in November.

Upcoming presentations including the New Jersey Medical Liability Task Force and New York State Neurological Society next week, the Australasian Cataract and Refractive Surgery Association in mid- July, and the American Society of Medical Executives in late July.

In case you haven't seen it, here is the link for the JCAHO Sorry Works! paper.

The paper provides a nice overview of the disclosure movement and Sorry Works! and rebuts some of the common misconceptions about disclosure. Check it out.
