UM Chief Risk Officer Rick Boothman recently reported that they have "excited actuaries" at the University of Michigan Hospital System. The Michigan actuaries are literally jumping joy because their successful full-disclosure program has done the following:
Halved the number of pending lawsuits against the University of Michigan Hospital System
Reduced defense litigation costs from an average of $65,000 per case to $35,000 per case, resulting in a total average annual savings of $2 million.
Boothman also reports that because honesty pervades all their dealings they are better able to learn from their mistakes and fix processes, which reduces medical errors and liability costs. It’s literally a self-improving system.
The Michigan program is modeled closely after the first successful full-disclosure program tested at the Lexington VA, which is described in the following Power Point presentation: Download.
